Exotic phases and quantum phase transitions: model systems and experiments

چکیده
The band theory of electrons predicts that any crystal with an odd number of electrons per unit cell must be a metal. However, strong electron-electron interactions can invalidate this conclusion, and such crystals can also be insulators, known as Mott insulators. I will use this term here more broadly: often the Mott insulator has a secondary instability to spin or charge ordering which increases the size of the unit cell, so that the ultimate ground state of the insulator does have an even number of electrons per unit cell (many examples of such instabilities will be discussed below). I will continue to refer to such insulators as Mott insulators because electron-electron interactions are crucial to understanding their broken symmetries and excitation spectrum. In contrast, describing the ordering by using the instabilities of a metallic state with an odd number of electrons per unit cell leads to a rather poor understanding of the insulator and of the energy scales characterizing its excitations. A canonical model used to study Mott insulators is the single-band Hubbard model

Quantum phases and fluctuations in correlated electron systems with frustration and competing interactions are reviewed. In the localized moment case the S=1/2 J1 - J2 - model on a square lattice exhibits a rich phase diagram with magnetic as well as exotic hidden order phases due to the interplay of frustration and quantum fluctuations. Their signature in magnetocaloric quantities and the hig...
متن کاملExotic quantum phases and phase transitions in correlated matter
We present a pedagogical overview of recent theoretical work on unconventional quantum phases and quantum phase transitions in condensed matter systems. Strong correlations between electrons can lead to a breakdown of two traditional paradigms of solid state physics: Landau’s theories of Fermi liquid and phase transitions. We discuss two resulting ‘‘exotic’’ states of matter: topological and cr...

We present a general introduction to the non-zero temperature dynamic and transport properties of low-dimensional systems near a quantum phase transition. Basic results are reviewed in the context of experiments on the spin-ladder compounds, insulating two-dimensional antiferromagnets, and double-layer quantum Hall systems. Recent large N computations on an extended t-J model (cond-mat/9906104)...
متن کاملComputational Methods for the Measurement of Entanglement in Condensed Matter Systems
At the interface of quantum information and condensed matter physics, the study of entanglement in quantum many-body systems requires a new toolset which combines concepts from each. This thesis introduces a set of computational methods to study phases and phase transitions in lattice models of quantum systems, using the Renyi entropies as a means of quantifying entanglement. The scaling of ent...
متن کاملStrongly correlated ultra-cold bosonic atoms in optical lattices
A major focus in condensed matter physics is to study the origin of exotic quantum phases such as coexistent and inhomogeneous phases, quantum criticality, and secondary ordered phases close to quantum critical points. Exotic phenomena in strongly correlated systems occur due to competing complex interactions of spin, charge, lattice, and orbital degrees of freedom. Complex quantum phases in st...
